La Direzione Generale Archivi del Ministero della Cultura ha acquisito l’archivio delle Industrie Aeronautiche e Meccaniche Rinaldo Piaggio S.p.A., già dichiarato di interesse culturale fin dal 29 marzo 1994.
L’acquisizione è avvenuta attraverso l’esercizio del diritto di prelazione da parte del Ministero, in occasione della vendita dell’azienda alla società turca Baykar, con l’obiettivo di salvaguardare e valorizzare un complesso documen-tario di eccezionale rilevanza storica e tecnologica.
Fondata nel 1884 a Genova Sestri Ponente da Rinaldo Piaggio, la società nasce come impresa specializzata nella lavorazione del legno per arredamenti navali e nella costruzione di carri e carrozze ferroviarie. Dopo l’apertura dello stabilimento di Finale Ligure nel 1906, l’azienda si affermò tra le maggiori realtà industriali italiane, contando centinaia di operai e tecnici.
Dal 1916 Piaggio avviò la produzione di materiali aeronautici, e nel 1922 vide la luce il primo aereo progettato in casa, il P.1. Nel 1933 fu inaugurata la prima galleria del vento realizzata in Italia, strumento d’avanguardia per testare l’aerodinamica dei prototipi. Tra gli anni Venti e Quaranta vennero prodotti numerosi velivoli, tra cui il P.108, unico bombardiere quadrimotore impiegato dalla Regia Aeronautica nella Seconda guerra mondiale.
Nel 1946 nacque la Vespa, simbolo del design e della rinascita italiana, mentre la divisione aeronautica continuò la propria attività con la produzione di nuovi modelli come il P.136, il P.148, il P.166 e il PD-808, con cui la Piaggio entrò nel mercato dei jet.
L’archivio acquisito comprende circa 140 metri lineari di documentazione, tra atti amministrativi, contabili e tecnici, progetti, disegni, fotografie, filmati, microfilm e riviste specializzate, insieme a una preziosa collezione di oltre cento modelli aeronautici in legno e altri materiali, alcuni realizzati per i test nella galleria del vento e altri destinati a espo-sizioni e campagne promozionali.
L’acquisizione testimonia l’impegno costante della Direzione generale Archivi nel tutelare la memoria industriale e tecnologica del Paese, parte integrante dell’identità culturale italiana. Si tratta di un patrimonio che unisce ricerca, innovazione e storia industriale, restituendo alla collettività la testimonianza di un’eccellenza conosciuta nel mondo.

The General Directorate of Archives of the Ministry of Culture has acquired the archives of Industrie Aeronautiche e Meccaniche Rinaldo Piaggio S.p.A., which had already been declared of cultural interest on 29 March 1994.
The acquisition took place through the exercise of the Ministry's right of pre-emption, on the occasion of the sale of the company to the Turkish company Baykar, with the aim of safeguarding and enhancing a documentary complex of exceptional historical and technological importance.
Founded in 1884 in Genoa Sestri Ponente by Rinaldo Piaggio, the company began as a business specialising in woodworking for naval furnishings and the construction of railway carriages and wagons. After the opening of the Finale Ligure plant in 1906, the company established itself as one of Italy's leading industrial enterprises, employing hundreds of workers and technicians.
In 1916, Piaggio began producing aeronautical materials, and in 1922, the first aircraft designed in-house, the P.1, was unveiled. In 1933, the first wind tunnel in Italy was inaugurated, a cutting-edge tool for testing the aerodynamics of prototypes. Between the 1920s and 1940s, numerous aircraft were produced, including the P.108, the only four-engine bomber used by the Regia Aeronautica (Italian Royal Air Force) in the Second World War.
In 1946, the Vespa was born, a symbol of Italian design and rebirth, while the aeronautical division continued its activity with the production of new models such as the P.136, P.148, P.166 and PD-808, with which Piaggio entered the jet market.
The acquired archive comprises approximately 140 linear metres of documentation, including administrative, accounting and technical records, projects, drawings, photographs, films, microfilms and specialised magazines, together with a valuable collection of over one hundred aeronautical models made of wood and other materials, some created for wind tunnel testing and others intended for exhibitions and promotional campaigns.
The acquisition testifies to the constant commitment of the General Archives Directorate to protecting the country's industrial and technological heritage, an integral part of Italian cultural identity. It is a heritage that combines research, innovation and industrial history, giving back to the community the testimony of excellence known throughout the world. (23/10/2025-ITL/ITNET)
